~AI SEASON 6 COMMENTARY~
saturday,
june 2, 2007
Well... I feel bad. Life took over for me and I
wasn't able to keep up with my AI Blog. Now that the season is over
I must say, I was surprised. Up until the end I imagined Melinda
would be in the finale with Blake, but that was not to be. The 17
year old from Arizona, Jordin Sparks, won the title this year. Was I
surprised? Maybe. I don't think Jordin had a bigger fan base than
Melinda or Lakisha, is just that the divas had a fan base that did
not stay up for 2 hours dialing non-stop. Jordin appealed to the
younger audience, much like Blake, the young teens who have nothing
better to do than dial for two hours, so that was the power-houses
voices doom. I think it's fine that Jordin won, but, somehow, I feel
let down by the show. If the voting was more like Dancing with the
Stars, half the judges, half the audience, who can only vote an X
amount of time, it would be more fair. But, in the end, does it
really matter who won? Last year I had predicted Chris Daughtry
would win, and even though he only took 4th place, he did win when
people needed to vote with their wallets. Chris' talent is amazing,
and I am very happy with his success. As we know, my Clay did not
win Idol season 2, but his success far exceeded Ruben's. I had many
people asking me what Idol CDs I would buy from this year's
contestants when they come out... it really depends on the album, I
would need to hear it first. The only slam dunk
for me, the one whose album I will buy with my eyes closed is Melinda and possibly even
Lakisha. All the others are a wait-and-see kind of thing. There are many other idols out
there from previous seasons whose album I am waiting for... Constantine, Ace Young, Anthony Federov... even though
I wasn't a Bucky fan last year, I did buy his album and I love
it.
Simon has stated that he will do
Idol for another 3 years... what then? The show could go on and
remain a staple of American Television, much like American Band
Stand or... yes, even Wheel of Fortune, but will it work without
Simon? I think it can if a judge with a BIG personality comes and
takes his place, and it does not necessarily needs to be british. I
love Mario Tonioli from Dancing with the Stars for example, he's
Italian and knows his stuff about Dancing, that's for sure...
whatever happens, I will be glued to the screen!
'til next season!

It's another interesting IDOL week
to say the least. I love 60s music, I was a small child in the late 60s when
this stuff was popular, but I remember it well, my mom played it on her record
player all the time! I must admit I was none too familiar with Peter Noone and
the other gal (see, I can't even remember her name) but I thought they were
outstanding!
As always, initially I was scared
for Haley because she sang first, but she was so cute and made such an impact
that I knew she would be going nowhere this week. I also thought that she was
rather unique this season and that she might very well last a while, there is no
other gal in the competition like her, much like Gina is unique as she is the
only "rocker" of the Top 12, while there are 4 gals that are very
similar and sing similar songs, hence may take each other's votes, they are
Lakisha, Melinda, Stephanie and Jordin... who will outlast everyone? My money is
on Melinda, I would love a Melinda-Lakisha showdown but I know that is not going
to happen. Blake as usual did a great job, I've never been fond of bip-boppping,
but he makes it interesting and he's very likable. I still enjoyed Chris Sligh,
as per the other guys... honestly, I thought one of them would be going home
this week again-the performances of Chris R., Phil Stacey and... do I need to
say his name... Sanjaya, were all worthy of the bottom 3. I thought it was so
silly of that girl to sob for Sanjaya... common people, the judges are right,
are we voting for the BEST SINGER or is this solely a popularity contest?
Sanjaya needs to go... are we going to see him outlast most like Scott Savol did
in Season 4? God, I hope not.
I was once again hoping against hope for a
Sanjaya elimination on elimination show. If he survived this elimination it
meant that he would be going on TOUR this summer... Give me a break. This kid
does not deserve this just based on his smile. Common... During the elimination
show, I was surprised to see how Ryan told in groups of three they were safe,
then got to the bottom 2 instead of 3, the bottom 2 being Stephanie and Chris
Richardson. Why didn't he do the usual bottom 3? I have a theory. We all want
Sanjaya out, right? By showing that he is not in the bottom 3 (even if he was)
the producers are hoping that people will not be voting for him next week to
keep him 'safe' so he can be eliminated. I am hoping this scheme works, if
that's their scheme.
So, in the bottom 2 we have Chris
R. and Stephanie. I thought for sure Chris would be going home, but instead
Stephanie got the boot. Shocked? Not really, but it was surprising. Stephanie
surely deserved to go on Tour with the other Idols instead of Sanjaya.
Who will be leaving us next week?
Well, Sanjaya really needs to get a move out of the show, but right now the show
is really surprising. I still think a guy needs to go next, maybe Chris R and
Phil Stacey if they don't pick up their game. This season seems like it's
anyone's game.
As per the TOP 6... let's see...
My money is still on Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin, Blake and Chris Sligh for sure. I
am not sure who will be there along with them to round up the top 6, at this
point it could be anyone, and, sadly, yes, even Sanjaya. GOD HELP US!!! Looking
forward to Gwen Stefani next week!!!

Yes, I know, I am a little behind
on my commentary! My apologies, life has been crazy around here!
Let me start with what happened
last week. I wrote the following BEFORE the elimination show in one of my lists.
"For one, I feel bad that any of the girls need to be "picked off" (with the sole exception of Antonella-she needed to go weeks ago, I didn't even think she was worthy of the top 24 to be completely honest!) to make room for 6 guys. The guys are horrible this season with just a couple of standouts.
Having said that, the two people that SHOULD NOT make the top 12 are definitely Antonella and Sanjaya. No question. Why are they still in this? I will never know. Yes, they SHOULD be eliminated, but WILL THEY? I don't think they will, so I will predict the other people in danger are most likely, for the guys, Jared and Sundance, and for the girls... AAAACK! I have no idea... Haley? Jordin? Stephanie? Sabrina? These gals are
definitely in danger, and if there is any justice in this world, only ONE will go."
After elimination I was surprised,
as usual, to see I was partly right. I always think I am going to be dead wrong,
but after watching the show for 6 seasons, I think I am beginning to understand
how it works. The public did vote Antonella out (alleluja!) and one of the girls
that I thought was in danger (sadly, Sabrina) did get the boot. BOO!!! Both guys
I thought were in danger if Sanjaya was safe did get eliminated as well. SO...
now we have our TOP 12!!! I was eagerly awaiting this week's show, and it was
pretty good.
I was already afraid for Brandon
when he started the show... as anyone that has read my blog knows, anyone that
sings FIRST is AUTOMATICALLY in danger unless they can bring the house down.
People tend to forget you if you sing first... I don't make the rules, I just
know what they are. Yes, he forgot the words, but that does not matter, he was
in danger already. As per the rest of the contestants... let's see. I, for one,
thought the judges were WAY too hard on both Blake and Chris Sligh... they
constantly HARP on how they have to be "unique" and make the song
their "own" yet they gripe that they changed the song too much? I
don't think they did, and I thought both were VERY enjoyable performances that
stood out. While it's true that perhaps, maybe, they modernized the song too
much, at the same time, they made it their own, and I applaud them for that. I
certainly appreciate that a heck of a lot more than anyone just doing a
'karaoke' version. Sanjaya, by far, was the weakest of the bunch, and the rest
of the guys were OK. Loved Phil as usual. The girls were ALL good too, even
Hailey stood out in my view. As Simon has said in the past, it's the
'forgettable' performances that make the bottom 3, not necessarily the worse
ones. My prediction for the bottom 3 was 3 guys. Not yet sure which 3, I was
hoping Sanjaya, of course, I knew Brandon was in danger, but for the third
person there, I was so afraid it would be Chris Sligh that I had my 10 year
old vote, vote and vote for him incessively for a while. I love the guy. I don't
think he'll win, but, who knows. It's anyone's game at this point.
I was hoping against hope for a
Sanjaya elimination for sure on elimination show, he sure needs to go FIRST, and
to my delight he was in the bottom 3... along with Brandon (no surprise there)
and... PHIL?? What the heck? Darn it, I should have had my 10 year switch after
a while and vote for Phil too. I predict Phil will not be in the bottom 3 again
for quite sometime. I was quite relieved when Phil was sent back to the couch.
PHEWWW~~!! Now it was between Brandon and Sanjaya. Sadly, Brandon got the short
end of the stick, probably thanks to those 'vote for the worse' websites that
are adamant in ruining the show. Ugh. Brandon surely did not deserve to go
first. He will still be in the ALBUM, but not on tour. Only the top 10 make the
tour this summer.
Who will be leaving us next week?
Of course we ALL know Sanjaya needs to go. The teeny-boppers and "vote for
the worse" fans need to realize this is a TALENT show and ruining the
chances of a talented individual for their amusement is just WRONG! I will need
to see the performances before I make more predictions.
As per the TOP 6... let's see...
We all know who SHOULD be there: Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin, but my money is also
on Blake, Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey. I usually like to guess the final two
usually, but this year I think we will see shockers. If anyone remembers history
(season 3 for example), we had 3 divas before, but only ONE made the finale. I
do think Melinda and Lakisha in some way cancel each other out. We NEVER had
similar contestants in the finale, it's always been a guy and a girl, or if two
boys and two girls, they were very different from each other musically, so I am
thinking right now the two most diverse and talented may very well be Lakisha
and Blake. I know some people say that last year diva was voted out early (Mandisa)
but I do not think it will be the case this year. It should be an interesting
race to say the least!

OH YES!!! The boys are back!! And,
may I say... with a vengeance? What a difference one week makes. I am so glad Sundance wasn't booted out last week, he totally
rocked the house this week, all I can say is WOW! Way to go! I also loved Phil Stacey this week and
Chris Sligh. Blake and Chris R. kept it interesting, while poor Sanjaya... what
was he thinking?
For the girls, looks like we have the DIVAS back that we had in season 3!!
Hello? Melinda, Lakisha, Stephanie and Sabrina are AMAZING! Most of the girls are really good with the exception of a
few which for sure will be gone soon. One thing that I simply do not understand
is why do these girls constantly make the SAME MISTAKE others have done in
previous seasons. STAY AWAY, FAR, FAR AWAY from songs from Celine Dion, Whitney
Huston, Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey (and yes, also Kelly Clarkson)
unless you know for certain you have the pipes to pull it off! If you do not,
sing a song that from a male singer or a song by Madonna or Britney or
something-those are always safe bets. Jordin also shined this week!! You go
girl!
Here's my predictions for the top 12 after the first 4 shows... It might change next week... LOL
For the boys: Blake, Brandon, Chris R., Chris S, Phil Stacey and I'd say Jared at this point.
For the girls: Lakisha, Melinda, Sabrina, Stephanie, Haley and Jordin.... Gina just rubs me the wrong way.
Eliminated this week? For the boys, I thought Sunjaya had a nice voice, but he's weak, aside him it's between AJ & Nicholas-they sing good, but the others are better. I can't imagine anyone else going home.
For the girls, bye bye Antonella (PLEASE!) and see ya later Alaina or Leslie. As per Antonella goes, I thought her comment to Simon 'You were wrong about Jennifer Hudson' proves the point that Simon was making to Melinda about others having little talent but lots of attitude.
For those that didn't see Jennifer Hudson on Season 3, let me fill you in. The Judges LOVED the trio of Divas of Fantasia, LatoYa and Jennifer. For those that cannot remember the show, Jennifer had sung AFTER Fantasia and LaToya, and by and large, her performance was not to par. If she would have sang like she did in Dreamgirls that night, Simon would have not said a word. Also, Simon had nothing to do with her not winning the show, the public DID NOT VOTE for her. Simon was SHOCKED when she was voted out just as everyone was shocked when CONSTANTINE was voted out and CHRIS DAUGHTRY was voted out, all of which had received some criticism by Simon during the show, YET, they don't go around bad mouthing Simon or IDOL like Jennifer has done. Besides, as much as I liked Jennifer, I STILL think Fantasia deserved to win, and let's remember that Jennifer's win was not for for singing, an Oscar is for ACTING folks!! Okay... Enough of that... ugh.
I was hoping to be right on
elimination, and to my delight... I was! Not to pat my back or anything, LOL.
Yes, I would have LOVED to see Antonella and Sanjaya go, but somehow I knew they
weren't going to. Alaina, Leslie, AJ and Nick were eliminated.
Who will be leaving us next week?
Next week is the make or brake week-whoever gets eliminated will get THIS CLOSE
to the top 12 and will have to go home thinking of what could have been, so
everyone will... AND SHOULD bring their "A" game. For the girls, the
three girls in jeopardy in my view are Antonella (Please GOD!), Gina and Jordin.
I can't imagine anyone else NOT making the top 12. For the boys, I am hoping
against hope that Sanjaya doesn't make it, other than that... maybe Jared is in
jeaopardy. Now that Sundance has brought it home, it means he's probably safe.

YES!!! The new season of American
Idol is underway! Unlike past years, however, it seemed as if I didn't have
'favorites' going into the top 24. As a matter of fact I was a little
disappointed even, as nobody seemed to stand out for me as the clear front
runner. I knew these contestants would have to 'grow' on me, so-to-speak, so I
was fervently awaiting the first "singing" show.
Tuesday the guys sang first. I
cannot say I was impressed. I had high hopes for Sundance and he was horrible.
Chris Sligh though was really cool, different! No, he does not have Clay's pipes
(who does, really?) but he was unique, his voice was stable and strong... and
he's funny to boot! Blake Lewis also surprised me, he reminded me of a young
STING. Phil Stacey was also really good, but I LOVE the song he sang and he did
a great job with it. Everyone else... like Simon said... forgettable. Nice, not
great. Sundance and Rudy topped my list to be eliminated this week-and I only
picked Rudy because he sang first and his performance wasn't memorable. You have
to be memorable to sing first! I've noticed over the years of watching the show that sometimes
singing first is detrimental-people tend to forget you.
The ladies sang on Wednesday. There
were really no 'bad' performances per se, however, some
did leave something to be desired. Nicole Tranquillo, while she wasn't bad, her
performance was... well, weird. Antonella, Alaina and Amy were just 'whatever',
nothing to write home about. The girl that stood out as the front runner without
a doubt was Lakisha. WOW! This girl can sing. As soon as I heard her sing I knew
immediately I had my front-runner, so I thought it was interesting how Simon
stated that he almost wanted to say to the other 23 to pack their bags. She is
truly in a different league. I would be surprised if she does not make the top
12 and even more surprised if she does not make the final 2 or even win. This
gal is likable and deserves it. The other girls that did a good job for me were
Gina, Melinda, Sabrina and Stephanie. My two that topped my list to
be eliminated this week were Antonella and either Amy or Alaina.
I wasn't sure what to expect
during the elimination show... I was happy to see I was at least 50% right..
yes, Amy and Rudy were eliminated, the other two contestants that got
the boot were not surprising though. Nicole and Paul weren't great. surprises to me.
I sure would not have put them in the top 12 by any stretch of the imagination.
So... what is my pick for the top
12? It might change next week... LOL
For the boys: Blake, Brandon, Chris R., Chris S, Phil Stacey and... hmmm... no clue. Well, that's a top 5 at least!
For the girls: Lakisha, Melinda, Sabrina, Stephanie, Gina and either Haley OR Jordin...
Who will be leaving us next week?
Unless they step it up on the next show, my bet is on Sundance and Antonella for
sure. Other than that, I can't see Alaina or Sanjaya staying much
longer... we'll see!!!
