~Princess Silvia's Book Club!~

I am an avid book reader.. but you would not know it nowadays... With a toddler running around it's hard to stay focused on anything!! I used to read all the time and I would carry a book with me everywhere I went. It wasn't until my Nicky was 5 years old that I was able to start reading again, so I am assuming my full time reading capabilities are most likely a few years off at this point!

Below are 'my picks' for favorite books of all time. Many are biographies, some are well known books, some are books of a different nature. Hope you like my picks!

~INSPIRATIONAL~

When Bad Things Happen to Good People
by Harold S. Kushner
I really loved this book for many reasons. After my son died the perennial 'why me' was lingering in my mind and I was haunted by it. This book made me understand that bad luck does happen. Good old Mother Theresa could have been in the WTC on September 11th and she would have been killed too, no matter how good or wonderful person she was. Yes... I know, she's been dead for quite sometime now, but that just proves the point. Things happen, we must simply learn to live with it, accept it and go on...
Changed by a Child : Companion Notes for Parents of a Child With a Disability
by Barbara Gill
This is also a very good book for parents of disabled children. It's one of my favorites. Every page has an experience, a thought, a way to make parents feel less alone. I highly recommend it.

~BIOGRAPHIES~

Call Me Anna: The Autobiography of Patty Duke
by Patty Duke
This is most likely one of the most powerful biographies I have ever read. Patty Duke had a very troubled and difficult childhood. She was basically taken away from her parents as a child and thrown into the hands of managers who stripped her of her personality, her self-esteem and, perhaps worst of all, her identity all together.  She became the youngest person to ever win an Academy Award. Beneath it all was the undiagnosed condition she suffered with, Bipolar Disorder. I applaud her for having the courage to let the whole world know about her private adversities, especially her struggle with illness. I highly recommend it.
Living History
by Hillary Rodham Clinton
Admittedly I am yet to finish this book... but not because it isn't interesting, it's just my busy life interfering!!
Yes, I am a democrat and have always loved Hillary. I haven't seen such a powerful 'First Lady' since Jackie O., and I am always drawn to powerful women. The fact that she loves children and is interested in their welfare and her stance in many subjects make her extremely interesting to me.
My husband tells me she is a b****. Well, maybe so, but most women that are powerful, stand up for their beliefs and speak their minds are often called the B word, and you know what? It's okay by me. To me that dirty word actually stand for 'Broad In Total Control of Herself'.. so... there! LOL

~SELF HELP~

Ten Stupid Things Women Do To Mess Up Their Lives
by Dr. Laura Schlessinger
I started listening to Dr. Laura one day on my drive home from work in 1994 and I was hooked ever since. While I don't particularly agree with everything she says I do applaud her for saying things people are afraid to say. This book is probably one of the very best books ever written for women and it should be the BIBLE for every young woman out there. I must say I keep buying myself copies and then I keep giving them away! My first copy I gave to my friend Kelly who had so many men troubles and my last copy I gave to my 14 year old step-daughter, hoping that just by reading it she will not make the mistakes so many women make!!  I highly recommend it.

~NOVELS, FICTION~

The Good Earth
by Pearl S. Buck
I thought it was interesting when this favorite book of mine because Oprah's Book Club selection! What a good choice!! It is really of no surprise to me that this book won a Pulitzer prize, it is simply outstanding. The first time I read it I was a teenager and my aunt gave it to me and told me that I would like it. It took me only 2 days to finish it, which was a first for me! I simply could not put it down. The basic story of it  is the life of a poor farmer, Wang Lung, and of his wife, O-lan. You may not think you could relate nor understand a different culture, but, promise you, it will get a hold of you and you will never forget it.  I highly recommend it.
